Celebrating Good Reads and New Projects

Hi, there, I haven't been very active on this blog since my eye surgery, but the eye is healing, and it's time to celebrate again.

But first, this Celebrate the Small Things blog hop is co-hosted by Lexa Cain at: Lexa Cain,  L.G. Keltner @ Writing Off The Edge , and Tonja Drecker @ Tidbits Blog. You can go to any of these sites to add your name to the links, if you want to participate. I recommend it, because it's always fun to see positive news that others are celebrating, and to share your own as well.

So, what am I celebrating?
1. I'm starting a new project--one I can't talk about yet, but it will keep me busy all through the month of July and possibly August.

2. Meanwhile, during my "recuperation" period, I've been reading lots of good books, and "filling the well."

3. And, three new beta readers read through my latest mystery rewrite and, apart from a few small tweaks, thought it was good. I'm letting it "rest" for now, while I mull over the comments, but August I plan to go through it with those tweaks and then send it out.

How about you? Do you have any projects you can't talk about yet? Have you read some good books lately? (Names, please. These days I do a lot of my reading based on recommendations.) Do you give your manuscripts time to rest between rewrites?

It's hard for me to leave a manuscript alone, but I know it is better to let the brain have time to consider options, solutions, and what not. I am now reading Justin Cronin's City of Mirrors, the third of his The Passage Trilogy. It's great, highly recommended especially for fans of Stephen King's The Stand. I've also just read Medeia Sharif's A Love That Defies and Annalisa Crawford's That Sadie Thing. Both good as well. Also loved Jojo Moyes's Me Before You.

Hi, Tamara. Thanks for stopping by. And thanks for the recommendations. As for time between rewrites, I'm pretty compulsive DURING a rewrite. I actually rewrite continually while I'm doing a major rewrite, if you know what I mean. But then I let it breath, so to speak. It's amazing what i can see later that I missed before. Have a great day.

I was wondering how you've been, Elizabeth. Glad to hear you're recuperating.

Have a great weekend.

Thanks, Cathrina. You do, too.

I have just read a wonderful debut novel by Elizabeth J. Church called The Atomic Weight of Love. I can recommend it. I also got a terrific rejection letter! Now that's worth celebrating. Glad your eye is doing so well.

I don't know much about eye surgery, but it never occurred to me that reading would be part of recuperating. Lucky for an avid reader and writer like you! Wishing you a quick recovery, good luck on your upcoming new project, and have a lovely weekend!

A "terrific" rejection letter? I got one of those years ago from the Joy Literary Agency that I still keep taped over my desk. It was downright inspirational. I'll have to hear more about the letter you got. Thanks for the book recommendation. (Great title!)

Thanks for the good wishes, Lexa. Yes, I was so happy to hear I could read. Otherwise, I would be a little stir crazy. The whole healing period is 6 to 8 weeks. Have a great week-end.

Good to hear you're recovering. I'm a great believer in resting manuscripts between re-writes. I have one I'm about to dive back into that's been on ice almost a year now. I hope I can remember what it's about!

Ha-ha, yes, that's an issue, too, isn't it! Remembering after not reading it for awhile, what it was about. But actually, I've found it all comes back right away. Good luck with diving into your manuscript and getting back into it.

Glad to hear you're doing better. I really need to get a MS done, but this summer isn't playing along well in that direction. Yay to the beta readers' positive comments and the 'secret' project. Sounds like great stuff.

Hi, T., and thanks for stopping by. Hope your own summer is going well. Sometimes just leaving the writing alone for awhile is a good idea.

Oh my goodness, I didn't know you had eye surgery! But I'm glad to know you are healing quickly. How nice that you've been able to read while you recuperate. I had a nice rest from my verse novel while we were on vacation, so it's time to get back to it now!

Joanne, I'm so impressed that you've written a novel in verse! I'll be so interested in reading it!
